What is GMRS Radio

The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a licensed radio service for short-distance, two-way voice communications. If you walk into any department store and purchase a walkie-talkie, you likely just purchased a GMRS or FRS radio. GMRS frequencies operate in the UHF range which perform better in wooded environments, around town, or any situation where there are obstructions. You are required to obtain a license to transmit on a GMRS radio. It is primarily for family members to communicate to each other, or other licensed users to talk to each other.

Who Can Use GMRS

You may apply for a GMRS license if you are 18 years or older and not a representative of a foreign government. If you receive a license, any family member, regardless of age, can operate GMRS stations and units within the licensed system. The FCC service rules for the GMRS are located in 47 C.F.R. Part 95 Subpart E. There is no test, just pay and play! The current fee is $30 for a 10 year license.

Does it Cost to Use Repeaters

No, well mostly. The repeaters are privately owned, but the FCC rules do not allow an owner to charge for services. However, service can be restricted to members who donate to the repeaters upkeep. Most are open with no fee for all licensed users.

Are the Radios Super Expensive

Ok so this is the cool thing, you can get mobile and hand held radios that are quite inexpensive. You can find good quality legal radios for around $50 to $300 each. Most are plug and play with simple programming. We can help with all of that
