What is GMRS?
It stands for General Mobile Radio Service.
Simply put, it is an FCC radio service designed for family’s and folks in the community to have a fun and useful communications network using conventional analog two way radios.
There are many nation wide repeaters that allow licensed operators to use these repeaters at no charge (or a donation) as a public service. Most repeaters are set up to provide a common “travel” tone to use repeaters as you travel through the USA.
Pretty cool, right!
What GMRS Is Not
- GMRS radio is never for business use. In fact, only an “individual” can obtain an FCC license to use the radios.
There is no test, just pay the FCC for a license which covers your entire family! - It is not HAM or Amateur radio.
- It is not CB radio.
- Business, non profits, or association’s are not eligible to obtain a license.

GMRS is not a vehicle for political, inflammatory, racial, or any type of hate speech or obscenity. These repeaters are privately owned and strictly enforced.
